When I was breastfeeding my first son, I was SO thirsty and struggling with supply issues. So, one of my friends sent me a pack of LMNT Electrolytes to try. At the time, I had been putting Nuun tablets in my water whenever I remembered. I’d use Nuun for all of my marathon training and even used it during the Boston Marathon.

The Best Electrolytes for Breastfeeding

As a runner, I knew electrolytes were important. However, I never felt like Nuun was making a huge difference, and I definitely didn’t notice an improvement in my supply or my thirst. But that first LMNT packet made such a difference. I immediately felt like my thirst was finally quenched (cliche to say but true). I ended up breastfeeding for two years, so it’s safe to say supply improved!

So, I fell in love and put LMNT on subscription soon after. So, I stopped feeling thirsty all day (which was honestly shocking because I was the person who was thirsty no matter how much water I drank). I even noticed an uptick in my supply. Also, I wish I’d discovered LMNT sooner because I know my years of marathon training would have looked and felt different!

Now I’m breastfeeding my second baby and to my surprise, I have an oversupply. I know that an oversupply is not only because I’m regularly taking LMNT. But proper hydration does contribute to adequate supply, so I have to believe it’s helping. It certainly isn’t hurting and I don’t feel chronically thirsty like I did at this stage with my first.

Electrolytes for Breastfeeding

The short answer: LMNT.

The longer answer is below.

First, are electrolytes important for breastfeeding?

First, let’s focus on your baby’s needs. Yes, babies need electrolytes. They get electrolytes  through breast milk (or formula – if you’re using formula, make sure it has electrolytes in it!). Your sodium intake directly connects to the amount of electrolytes the baby gets.  

In fact, in the very early stages of breastfeeding when your milk comes in as colostrum, the sodium concentration is elevated and this helps the baby’s immune system. There’s actually research that suggests that a child’s health could be negatively impacted with inadequate breast milk electrolytes.

Sodium is also correlated with cognitive function as your baby grows. It can even help with better motor function, memory, and IQ! Read this study on sodium and premature babies. So interesting. Your salt status is also connected to milk production volume. This study shows that farmers have been adding sodium to dairy cow’s diets to increase milk production for a while! While there’s not enough research to concretely say this is true on the human front, I feel confident that taking LMNT increased my  supply (with my first, and definitely now with my second).

Unfortunately, because many people believe that restricting sodium helps expecting mothers avoid preeclampsia, lots of moms limit salt both during and after pregnancy.

However this 2018 study found that there’s “no convincing evidence” that salt intake influences hypertension or preeclampsia risk. Additionally, women with preeclampsia are also more likely to have low blood sodium levels compared to others. Low sodium can result in hormonal changes that actually raise blood pressure. So, increasing sodium intake can actually help LOWER blood pressure.

All this to say, since there’s actually evidence that low-sodium diets can negatively affect your health and since we know sodium is important for baby’s growth and development, I did not decrease my salt intake when pregnant or breastfeeding. I actually increased it. I was getting regular bloodwork. Also, I knew my sodium was low – even with LMNT. So, there were no concerns with me continuing with it. However, every pregnancy is different. So, talk to your doctor about your specific situation – your health, your thirst, your bloodwork, everything.

How much sodium do breastfeeding moms need?

The answer is more than you think, especially if you’re a breastfeeding mom. While the FDA recommends 2,300 mg a day (which is about 2.3 grams) for people 14 years and older, to help reduce high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease and deaths, there’s new science that shows that 4-6 grams of sodium a day is actually optimal (granted, this is dependent on diet and lifestyle). And this study actually found that people who consumed lower than 2.5g per day of sodium had higher blood pressure than those who consumed larger amounts. Obviously, talking to your doctor is important since everyone’s health is different, so take this all with a grain of salt (heh) but read LMNTs take on why they recommend so much sodium here.

Since nursing moms are also providing sodium to their babies, more sodium is likely best. Nursing moms may actually find that they need a little more than that to help replace what’s given to their baby.

How much sodium is in LMNT?

LMNT electrolyte drink mix has the optimal ratio of electrolytes – 1000 mg of sodium, 200 mg of potassium, and 60 mg of magnesium –  to support hydration. It has zero sugar, no artificial ingredients or fillers, and no preservatives. Many (most, actually) electrolyte drink mixes are full of sugar; and while sugar can help you absorb sodium and fluids, it’s not essential for hydration. So, LMNT doesn’t include sugar. It doesn’t taste like chemicals or medicine, which I’ve found other similar, salty options too (like Liquid IV).

LMNT is super salty (which I love) but you can add more or less water to your preference if it’s too salty for you. I like a full packet in my 24 oz water bottle, but my nanny uses only half a packet each time she drinks LMNT, and saves the other half for next time. You could also just add more water to your water bottle to help dilute it. 

It’s a small thing, but I appreciate that it’s a powder so I don’t have to wait for a tablet to dissolve, like I did with Nuun.

Other important electrolytes for breastfeeding

Potassium

Potassium is important  because it balances the effects of sodium and helps women maintain healthy blood pressure during pregnancy. Shooting for 3.5–5 grams of potassium per day is a good goal. Pregnant and nursing moms should aim for the higher end of that range. LMNT contains 200 mg of potassium, which won’t get you to that mark alone. So, be sure to prioritize potassium rich foods in your diet, like bananas, avocado, spinach, and kale. 

Magnesium

Magnesium is an important electrolyte at all stages of life, but especially pregnancy and postpartum. Also, magnesium is involved in bone formation and density which makes it important for a baby’s development. 400–600 mg of magnesium daily is a good target, and LMNT contains 60 mg, so it’s important to eat magnesium-rich foods to help keep your magnesium level optimal. I also take this Natural Calm magnesium supplement at night.

How many packs of LMNT should you drink per day?

Everyone’s electrolyte needs will vary so the answer depends on the person, and there’s not a one-size-fits-all answer (especially as a breastfeeding mom). However, LMNT shouldn’t be your sole source of electrolytes each day. Clinical data shows that around 5-7g of sodium, 1-3g of potassium, and 250-500mg of magnesium throughout the day is ideal, and it’s great if those are from various sources (ideally from predominantly whole foods). That equates to 1-2 packets a day depending on your activity level and if you’re exclusively breastfeeding 1 one packet contains 1000 mg of sodium, 200 mg of potassium, and 60 mg of magnesium. (Source) I have 2, sometimes 3, packets a day since I have low sodium, have resumed working out and I’m exclusively breastfeeding.  

LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix Flavors

There are a lots of LMNT flavors:

  • Citrus salt
  • Grapefruit
  • Orange salt
  • Watermelon salt
  • Raw unflavored
  • Raspberry Salt
  • Lemon Habanero
  • Mango Chili
  • Chocolate Salt

My favorite flavor of LMNT is watermelon or raspberry. Citrus and grapefruit are pretty good too. I do not like the spicy ones unless I’m using them in my favorite virgin margarita. You can also try a few different ones in a variety pack, which you get for free with my referral link. They also have seasonal flavors, like chocolate caramel and chocolate mint in the winter. Note that the chocolate ones are meant to be mixed with HOT water and consumed like a hot cocoa powder inspired drink. I didn’t realize that for about 6 months and was so confused by the chunky texture and thought it was so nasty. Once I tried it hot, it was a game changer and I loved having it after my cold winter runs.

I did not like the raw unflavored but if you have a different recovery drink you like (perhaps a protein shake or something that has carbs and calories) and want to up the electrolytes in it without impacting the flavor, that may be a good option for you.

Ingredients

Each flavor has one or two different ingredients (the natural watermelon flavor has Malic Acid and the orange flavor uses Citric Acid, for example). Here’s the general breakdown for the Citrus Salt packet. Again, each packet has the perfect balance of sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Most runners know how important running shoes are, but new runners often overlook the importance of running socks. You probably know it’s important to get fitted properly for the correct pair of shoes (and, remember, my favorite running shoes aren’t necessarily the best shoes for you), so once you’ve picked out your shoes, the next most important item is socks.

If you’re going to spend a good chunk of money on good running shoes (let’s be honest, they’re expensive!), you don’t want blisters. And the right socks go a long way in preventing them. You can’t just run in cotton socks! Cotton holds on to sweat and moisture, which leads to blisters. Additionally, since cotton slides more easily, they may rub and create hot spots, which will lead to blisters. No thanks. You’ll want real running socks that wick sweat, feel great, and have good durability (they should last you years!).

Running socks can affect your running performance more than you’d think, so it’s important to choose socks that keep your feet dry and comfortable, and of course, blister-free. The WORST thing is getting a few miles into a run and realizing you have to run back home with a budding blister. You’ll likely adjust your gait to compensate for the pain and that can lead to bigger injuries.

What Socks to Wear for Running

Running socks come in different fabrics, ankle heights, thickness and comfort levels, and sizes. You might like no-show socks, ankle socks, quarter socks or calf socks. Additionally, you’ll need to decide how much compression you like and if you want additional arch support in your socks. (Yes, even socks can provide arch support like shoes!).

It’s also important to look for socks with the right material. Again, this means no cotton socks. While some athletic socks are made with cotton, running socks aren’t. Running socks are made with synthetic material which wicks sweat away from your foot which keep them dry and prevents blisters. If your socks don’t wick moisture, DO NOT run in them!

As a note: most running socks are made for both men’s and women’s running, and most aren’t unisex. Always check the sizing chart to figure out which size you should buy. For more essential running gear for beginners, check out this post.

Today I’m dedicating this post to the best running socks for new and seasoned runners. Because it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been running – we all need good socks!

My favorite budget pick: Zella

I used to be very loyal to the Lululemon Power Stride Tab Socks, but I’ve recently become obsessed with this Zella pair. They’re stretchy and thin socks (amazing for my post-pregnancy feet that are a little bigger than before). They’re moisture wicking, which is essential for running sock, and priced really well at $25 for a 3 pack. I like that they’re no-shows and come in lots of colors. They’re made with a nylon and spandex blend. They’re also great for riding the Peloton. For sure my favorite budget pair of socks.

Zells Socks to Wear for Running

Easiest to find: Lululemon

These are my second favorite pair and very easy to find if you have a Lululemon store in town. I tend to like thinner socks than some runners. My feet get really warm, especially in the hot humid summers in North Carolina, so thinner socks like these help keep them cool. The Power Stride Tab socks are $14 per pair, which is a significantly more than the Zella socks, but they last forever and they have passed the long run test. They also come in a 3-pack for $38. They have a seamless toe construction which I love. I did a lot of my marathon training in them! The downside is I feel like she started to wear out more quickly than others I’ve had in the past.

My Favorites: Injinji

I used to run in Vibram toe shoes, so I’m used to that feeling! I love that my toes don’t rub against each other when I wear these toe socks. They are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, since everyone will have different preferences for their running socks. However, if you struggle with toe blisters, give these a try!

Smartwool

I have a lot of running friends who like Smartwool socks. They have lots of options, but all of them are made with a merino wool blend and body-mapped mesh zones for breathability. I like that the Ultra Light socks are incredibly soft and thin. These are the socks my mom swears by and she’s been running for 40+ years!

Balega

Belega socks are super popular for runners who want super cushioned thicker socks. In fact, they were the first “real” running socks I bought about 18 years ago! I remember them being quite thick, but they do now have thinner options. The most popular type of Balega socks among my friends are the Balega Hidden Comforts. These have extra features like knit-in mesh ventilation and extra cushioning under the sole. They have a very comfortable heel tab to prevent any rubbing on the back of your shoe, and they’re known for their light cusion. They’re made with Belega’s Drynamix® Polyester, nylon, and elastane. They’re around $14 a pair.

Bombas

Bombas are another runner favorite – my mom likes these too! They are very soft with great cushion, but aren’t as thick as some other brands I’ve tried. They’re around $16 a pair, but you can save money by buying a pack of them.

Feetures

These hug the heel and have great cushion. They don’t slide around in running shoes which helps keep the foot blister free. They are known for their compression too. These are worn by so many of my followers on Instagram. When I polled my followers on Instagram about what running socks they love and why, Feetures were among the top choices, but I personally found Feetures socks got stiff after a while.

Drymax Trail Run 1/4 Crew Turndown Socks

These socks are made for trail runners. The higher shaft helps protect your feet and ankles from whatever terrain you’re running on. They are made with fibers that are sweat wicking and fight off odors. They have great moisture management. I love that you can roll down the top of the sock if you don’t want them as high. I wear these when we go hiking in Boone.

Swiftwick

These Swiftwick socks are known for their sweat wicking merino wool material. They make all sorts of socks, but the most popular are the Aspire Zero which are thin, no-show socks. They hug the inside of your foot for arch support. Swiftwick also makes my favorite compression socks — more on those below. While I tend to prefer no show socks, I think ankle socks are the most practical for outdoor running or long runs, and Swiftwick makes good ones.

Compression socks

Many people think of compression socks as only knee highs but they actually different length socks like no-show and ankle height compression socks! Have you ever wondered what they really do? Compression socks are designed to help your legs fight the effects of gravity by pushing blood back up to the heart. They even help with soreness. I’m a huge believer in the knee high version. I think they feel great and definitely help my legs feel fresher. And they’re a great option for chilly race days when you need just a little bit more coverage but don’t want pants.

This pregnancy has been totally different than my first. When I was pregnant with Thomas, I was motivated to run everyday (including the day we went to the hospital to have him), I wanted to get dressed in “real” clothes everyday, and I honestly felt pretty dang good physically from my second trimester onward! This pregnancy, however, has been more challenging. Don’t get me wrong, I’m THRILLED to be pregnant, and I know that every single hard moment is totally worth it, but I’m just exhausted!

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m 39 or if it’s because I’m still taking hormone injections or because I’m running after Thomas (or maybe all three!), but I haven’t wanted to run or workout as much as I did the first time. And that’s totally fine! However, when I do workout or run, I end up feeling 10x better throughout the rest of my day. It’s great for my physical health, but it’s also a huge boost for my mental health as well. It really helps with my nausea too (which has been ongoing even into my second trimester).

So while I’d rather stay on the couch some days, I’m forcing myself to move my body. And to help motivate myself, I ordered some new workout clothes that are maternity specific. A lot of my pre-pregnancy workout clothes are were working at 21 weeks, but I knew I’d be more comfortable in something that was actually designed for a growing bump, so I did a little shopping.

I’ll say this forever, but there’s nothing more motivating than a new workout outfit or pair of running shoes. It just does the trick for me! Today, I’m sharing my recent maternity workout finds from Amazon. Since I’ll only be pregnant for a few months in the grand scheme of things, I didn’t want to spend a ton on new clothes that I’ll only wear right now. AND, I’ve been consistently impressed with Amazon’s workout sets in the past, so I was excited to see what I could find for this bump.

I’m including my recent Amazon finds below, and I’m also including some workout clothes that I wore for my first pregnancy so that I could share some third-trimester favorites even though I’m not quite there yet this go round. Let’s jump in!

Pregnancy Workout Outfits for Every Trimester

POSHDIVAH Maternity Yoga Shorts

These maternity yoga shorts were by far my favorite pick of my whole Amazon haul! They are SO GOOD. So comfortable, the fits is perfect, and I love the material. I paired them with my non-maternity v-neck Amazon workout tank and loved the combo. I got a size XS in the 5″ length.

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Y Back Maternity Tank Top

I fell in love with this Magenta workout tank from Amazon. The color is so rich and feels perfect for fall. The fit is great too — I love CRZ Yoga’s workout clothes when I’m not pregnant, so I felt confident this would be a winner too. If you ever had the Power Y tank from Lululemon, this is just like it. I ordered a size XS and I can tell it’s will fit my entire pregnancy. I also bought this tank in the Taupe brown color and felt like the shade was a little to light. So, I felt sort of meh in it. I think it would be a great option if you have darker skin!

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Maternity Leggings Over The Belly 25″

I bought these matching magenta maternity leggings to go with the tank above. The color is just slightly different, but it’s hard to tell and I don’t really mind. I ordered an XS in these as well and feel the same way I do about the tank ––I can tell they will fit throughout the rest of my pregnancy.

I bought the Taupe color in these leggings as well but didn’t love the color on me.

CRZ YOGA Womens Butterluxe Maternity Yoga Shorts

Like I said before, I love me some CRZ Yoga! These maternity yoga shorts were SO soft! Unfortunately they were a little big on me, but keep in mind that I’m 5’1″ and super petite. I feel confident that they’d be perfect on someone with a bigger bump or who’s taller. They get my stamp of approval, even though I didn’t end up keeping them for myself. I ordered a size small which may have been the issue! I should have tried an XS. The inseam is 6″ rather than 5″ like the first pair I linked and loved.

POSHGLAM Maternity Shorts

So many influencers have shared these loose maternity shorts and I was so bummed that they were too big for me! Like the shorts above, I know they’d be perfect on someone with a bigger bump and more height. The quality felt great and the style is nice and relaxed. They were so comfortable and lightweight! I got these in a small (they don’t have an XS) and they were too big. I would say they do run TTS if you’re not 5’1″!

POSHDIVAH Maternity Bodysuit

I ordered this maternity onesie because I’ve been loving this FP Movement Runsie I got earlier this summer so much. It was too big on me, but I can tell it would be perfect on someone taller who has a bigger bump. I’ve seen influencers I follow wear this exact bodysuit and rave about it, so I do think it’s a worthwhile recommendation, especially as a budget option for the FP Movement one.

SYROKAN Adjustable Sports Bra

If you’re in need of a budget friendly sports bra that works well for pregnancy (and nursing), this adjustable Amazon sports bra is the way to go. The straps are velcro and unlatch from the front, making nursing much easier pre or post workout. You can also adjust the sport of this bra by tightening the velcro straps.

SHEFIT Ultimate Sports Bra

If you’re willing to spend a bit more, I cannot recommend the SheFit Ultimate Sports Bra enough. It’s THE single most supportive sports bra I’ve ever worn (too supportive for when I’m not pregnant!). You can adjust almost every part of it, and the front zipper makes it much easier to take on and off than other sports bras. I love this for nursing too. You can read my full review on the blog where I share more details.

Half Zip Oversized Sweatshirt

I don’t know if this oversized half-zip technically falls into the workout gear category, but I wear it before and after my workouts and it’s definitely perfect for a bump, so I’m including it. I LOVE this sweatshirt! The taupe color is super pretty (and better than the taupe workout set above), the length covers my bum which I appreciated for form fitting shorts, and the collar stands up on it’s own. Winner winner! I have a size small. It has very similar vibes to the famous Lululemon Scuba pullover.

POSHDIVAH Over The Bump Maternity Leggings

The majority of my non-maternity workout leggings still work for me right now as long as I wear a longer top. But in the event that I want to wear a sports bra or a cropped workout top, I wanted to have maternity specific leggings that weren’t part of a matching set. These are a great option for an over-the-bump legging. I have an XS in these.

HeyNuts Pure&Plain 7/8 Athletic Leggings

For non-maternity specific leggings, I love the brand HeyNuts. I have a couple different pairs now, and I’d say they are about 90% a good as Lululemon. I just sized up to a S in this Pure&Plain pair since I was starting to want something with a little more room, but they run true to size if you aren’t pregnant.

G4Free UPF 50+ UV Shirts

I haven’t tried this loose fitting workout top yet, but the reviews are great and I LOVE the high low style! The side slit will be perfect with a bump too. I could really use some looser fitting workout tops for when it cools off. If not for workouts, then just for athleisure. I would likely size up one size in this since it’s not maternity specific.

While I’m wearing mostly Amazon this pregnancy, I wanted to share the pieces I loved during my first pregnancy since I was running more than I am now! I’d say the picks above are better for low impact workouts, and the below finds are a little better suited for running.

Lululemon Align Shorts

If you’re ready to spend a little bit more than those Amazon picks, go for the Lululemon Align Shorts. They were, by FAR, my favorite piece of clothing for pregnancy workouts when I was pregnant with Thomas. I got hooked on the Lululemon Align Leggings a few years ago but was skeptical of the shorts for some reason. But, after realizing how comfortable the leggings are as my belly grew, I purchased the Align Shorts. The Align fabric is very lightweight and the waistband is VERY stretchy without ever feeling like it’s stretched out. They worked all the way to 38 weeks and at that point, they finally wouldn’t stay up on my belly and I had to fold them under my bump.

I’ve purchased the Align Shorts in the 6″ length and while they also come in a 4″, I prefer the longer version since inner-thigh chafing has become an issue since getting pregnant. (I’ve had some chafing there over the years but not consistently like I do now!) I did size up from my regular Lululemon shorts size but I think my normal size probably would have worked too since I’m still able to wear my Align Leggings in my usual size.

Sienta Maternity Rio Shorts

Once I got past 38 weeks while pregnant with Thomas, my beloved Align leggings and shorts didn’t stay up under my bump. I loved the slight support these Senita maternity shorts gave with the thicker material once it got cooler. This is a photo from 40 weeks pregnant when I’d just gotten back from a run in the Senita maternity shorts.

Lululemon Align Leggings

Similar to the Align Shorts, the Lululemon Align Leggings are incredibly comfortable, even when not pregnant. When I’m riding the Peloton, I prefer the Align Leggings or Align Crops for a little more coverage vs. the Align Shorts. It’s a bit uncomfortable if my inner thighs rub against the saddle. Which makes me think… I bet the Align Shorts 8″ would be PERFECT since even with AC, it can get toasty with the sun coming in! I wear these and my Amazon leggings interchangably. Also, I need multiple pairs of leggings since I try to workout everyday.

Oiselle Light Lux Swing Tank

I love how stretchy this Light Lux Swing Tank is by Oiselle. It’s perfect for stretching over a bump and also works when you’re not pregnant. If you’re a runner, you may already know about this brand, but if not, you HAVE to try their clothes! I wore it a ton when I was running and pregnant with Thomas. I have it on in the photo below!

FitSplint Maternity Belt 

When I was running while pregnant with Thomas, I LOVED this this belly band. It helped my severe round ligament pain.

SpiBelt

While I don’t always run with my phone, after I fell while running in my first trimester with Thomas, I never run without it. I use the SpiBelt to carry my phone and have for over 8 years. It’s faded but never stretched out like some other belts I used in the past. I love it! If I want to listen to music when I run, I use my Shokz headphones.

Nathan Speeddraw Hand Held Water Bottle

Running with water is a must for running and especially when pregnant since I get hot more easily. I carry this hand-held water bottle with ice water on every single run, and put LMNT Electrolytes in it too!

Since I’ve been running for over 20 years, I have tried a few (cough, a few dozen) running bras. And as a woman whose cup size has fluctuated a lot as I’ve aged and especially when pregnant, postpartum and nursing, I know how frustrating it is to find a bra that fits only to have it not fit with body changes. SheFit solves that problem since it’s the most customizable sports bra I’ve ever found. It is also the most supportive running bra I’ve ever found. And that’s important since during pregnancy and while nursing, I’m anywhere from a 32D to a 34F.

When I was running while pregnant, I tried a lot of bras out, ultimately landing on this SYROKAN adjustable sports bra from Amazon because it was affordable and comfortable. I wasn’t ready to do a ton of research and invest in a new running bra quite yet, since I was really liking my Amazon bra. And my mileage was becoming less and less as I neared my due date. (But I did run the day I went to the hospital to deliver!) However, once I had my son and began my return to running postpartum, I knew I needed to invest in a high quality sports bra that was nursing friendly AND gave me great support since my cup size was a LOT bigger than I was used to, especially once my milk came in.

SheFit Sports Bra Review

When googling like crazy to find the most supportive bra, I discovered SheFit, a company that was pitched to SharkTank in 2016 on episode 716. The brand was created by Sara Moylan, a woman who didn’t set out to start a business, but was simply looking for a solution for her own problem. Sara struggled to find a sports bra that was supportive enough for high intensity workouts. She found she had to decrease the intensity of her workout in order to prevent her breasts from feeling sore. When she couldn’t find the product she wanted on the market, she decided to make it herself.  Before pitching to the sharks, she even had a kickstarter campaign that got her going. I loved learning about the beginnings of SheFit – it’s impressive!

SheFit is most well-known for their the Ultimate Sports Bra, a fully adjustable sports bra that was designed for high impact and had great support. When I saw the size range they offered, I was so excited to try one. I first shared this post after running in SheFit for about 3 months and since I continued to run it in exclusively while breast-feeding (for almost two years), I obviously love it.

Sports Bra Choice after Breastfeeding

Once my breast size decreased once I stopped breastfeeding, I switched to this On Performance bra. But, now that I’m pregnant again, I’m back to only wearing my ShetFit bras for running. (I still go for something a little softer for my Peloton, pilates and strength workouts – usually one of my Amazon workout outfits — since the support of a SheFit isn’t necessary for those workouts.)

Let’s jump in!

Like I mentioned above, SheFit it best known for their Ultimate Sports Bra, but they also make a few other sports bras, including low impact bras, bras for women with smaller chests, an everyday bra, and even tops and bottoms. Today I’m going to dedicate this post to a review of the SheFit Ultimate Sports Bra since that’s the one I have and the only SheFit product I’ve tried.

SheFit Ultimate Sports Bra Review

The Ultimate Sports Bra is a wire-free sports bra with fully adjustable fit and support. It’s made with bounce-taming fabric for total control. Before I ordered it, I read that you could adjust the shoulder straps AND the band under the cups. I also knew that it used a zipper to open the bra completely. So you put it on like you’d put on a jacket. The velcro shoulder straps and the bounce-taming fabrics were initially the most appealing things about the bra to me since I knew I needed a nursing friendly bra and something to provide support for my, ahem, VERY large chest while breastfeeding.

My first impression was that this sports bra was HIGHLY engineered and very well thought through.

I was also so impressed that it came with its own laundry bag to help me take care of it! You can tell a woman created this bra because even the smallest detail like a zipper lining (to prevent the zipper from rubbing) was added.

Putting on the bra was slightly challenging at first because the fabric is really strong and doesn’t have much stretch. When I did get it on, it took me a few minutes to get used to, just like any new bra would take. I honestly didn’t like it for the first few runs because it feels so different from other bras (i.e. not stretchy!). But now I only run in my SheFit bras (I’ve since bought a couple more).

I messed around with the straps a little to figure out how much to tighten them. And when I finally figured out how tight I liked it, I decided I LOVED this bra. It just took a little fiddling at first. Now that I’ve gotten everything adjusted to the tightness I like, I use the front zipper to take it on and off.

First Time Trying the SheFit Ultimate Sports Bra

When I first tried the Ultimate Bra, I was breastfeeding exclusively and starting to get back into running after a few months off. (I also blogged about how to run while breastfeeding.) I was SO impressed with how supportive the bra felt on my first run. If you’re postpartum, you know how different your body feels when you start to work out again. So feeling confident in a sports bra was a huge win. I loved how tight I was able to get the straps, and how little bounce I had when I ran. I found that the band under the cups was really supportive but not uncomfortable. And easy to loosen pre and post run.

Let’s get into specifics:

Material

The two-way stretch fabric is similar to most sweat-wicking sports bras. But it’s a strong fabric. And you can tell it will hold up in the wash as soon as you feel it. The outside of the bra is 100% polyester. The inside of the bra is lined with Power Mesh™ (86% Nylon, 14% Spandex) for silky comfort and has contoured seams (so it fits really well). The cups are seamed for natural definition and shape and the pads are removable. Removable pads are always slightly annoying to me. But since the Ultimate Bra is supposed to be fully customizable, this follows that rule.

Comfort

One thing I was interested to test was if the zipper was easy to use. When you have larger busts, sometimes it’s difficult to get a zipper to start on a sports bra, but the Ultimate bra has a hidden hook and eye at the top of the zipper, which is SO helpful. It’s similar to the tiny hook and eye you’ll find on a dress zipper that provides that extra set of hands we always need. Major points for this. (I actually didn’t notice these for the first few months that I had my bra — oops — and it was a game changer when I discovered them.)

When discussing the comfort of the bra, we have to look at the scenario where you would wear it. Lounging at your house? No. Not comfortable. Running? Absolutely. When you’re running, you want a strong, supportive bra that keeps your chest in place. So the more support and structure, the better, especially if you have larger cup size. I LOVE how “held in” I felt in this bra. But I definitely wouldn’t wear this around the house all day. (I would wear one of my favorite lounge bras instead.) But, for high-impact workouts, I love that the SheFit Ultimate has so much support without underwire. I also love how wide the band is, which definitely aids in the comfortability.

It’s worth noting that the shoulder straps can be worn two ways (and X or H-back formation), so you’re sure to find a way to make the bra feel perfect on you. I first start with the H-back hook but now do the X strap since they stay on much better — most bra straps slip off my shoulders so this is more comfortable for me.

SheFit Fit and Sizing

The fit and sizing/adjustability is one of SheFit’s best qualities. Their bras range in size from A-Cup to I-Cup with sizes X-Small, Medium, Large, Luxe, 1Luxe, 2Luxe, 3Luxe, 4Luxe, 5Luxe and 6Luxe. Since their sizes aren’t listed in typical bra sizes, you’ll want to use their fit finder. This is what the screen looks like– just enter your information and let them recommend a size. My size was perfect when it arrived.

A few other details about the fit of the bra worth noting are the sizes of bands, since those are really important when holding up your bust. The adjustable rib band is 2” wide, which adds extra support. The padded straps are 1-1.25” wide, which also feels great.

Style

Another thing that I appreciated about SheFit is that they offer a bunch of colors. It’s not necessary, but it’s so nice to have options! The straps can be worn in a X or and H, which makes it a good option for almost every workout top.

How Do You Wash a SheFit Bra?

You can wash the SheFit Ultimate Sports Bra by hand or via the washing machine. If you use the washing machine, it’s best to remove the pads and zip the whole thing up. Then allow it to air dry. If you wash by hand, simply massage your detergent into the bra and rinse thoroughly. Do not put your bra in the dryer!

Difference Between SheFit Ultimate And Flex

When you’re browsing SheFit’s website you’ll notice that there’s another very popular sports bra option called the Flex Bra. The Flex bra was created for medium impact, versus the Ultimate bra’s design for high-impact. While I’ve never tried the Flex bra personally, from what I’ve read, the Flex bra is better choice for workouts like cycling, pilates, power walking, etc. The Flex bra is made with 4-way stretch fabric (the Ultimate bra has 2-way stretch) which allows you to move and stretch with total comfort and control.

When I’m running, I like things to stay in place, and I don’t want any bouncing. I haven’t ordered the Flex bra for this reason.

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe High Neck Longline Sports Bra

This long sports bra/cropped tank is on rotation for me weekly. If I’m not wearing it for a Peloton ride or pilates class, it’s only because it’s in the wash. It’s stretchy and comfortable, but it holds me in really well. It wicks sweat just as well as any top from Lululemon, and the color is hard to pass up. I wear an XS in this.

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Square Neck Longline Sports Bra

This square neck navy tank is also in my regular rotation. It’s one of the most flattering workout tanks I’ve ever worn, and it’s comfortable. I LOVE the lower neckline that’s a little sexy but still modest and practical, and the cropped length pairs perfectly with high waisted leggings. This runs true to size and I wear an XS.

HeyNuts Longline Zeal Bras

This burgundy scoop next tank is another good one for Peloton rides or pilates! I got this last fall and still love it. The neckline is a classic scoop neck and fits true to size. I prefer how the CRZ tops look just a little more (the high neck and square neck styles), but that’s all personal preference.

Pima Cotton Tie Back Workout Tank

I just ordered this tie-back tank for summer running and absolutely love it. The back tie detail is a fun touch (and makes it a better option for runs or peloton instead of a workout where you’re laying on your back). I got hot pink in size XS.

Short Sleeve Breathable Athletic Top

I tend to go for loose tanks over short sleeve shirts If I’m running, but this short sleeve running tee is JUST like the Lululemon Swiftly tee and since that’s such a popular style, I wanted to share this lookalike. It’s comfortable and flattering, and comes in a ton of colors. It’s exactly like the Swiftly tee, so just get this instead. I swear a size XS and own the light pink color.

CRZ YOGA Pima Cotton Cropped Tank

I’ve always liked loose cropped workout tanks since they’re a nice option when something skin-tight just isn’t comfortable. This is a pima cotton, so it’s slightly less sweat wicking than other workout tops. This top is cropped (and I’m 5’1″ for reference), but it’s super cute paired with high waisted leggings or shorts.

The Gym People Cropped Workout Tank

This is another option for a loose fitting workout tank, but a different brand than the top above. If you like a more traditional athletic material, I would go for this rather than the option above. I got this in white in a size XS.

HeyNuts Wherever Crop Top

This simple black crop top is a tank I just got and I loved it as soon as I put it on. It’s padded like a sports bra but the length of a tank. It’s flattering and comfortable and has a decent amount of compression without feeling too tight. This will work for all types of workouts, even running. I wouldn’t run 10 miles in it but for a shorter run, I think there is enough support.

The Gym People V-Neck Longline Sports Bra

This padded v-neck longline sport bra is an almost identical lookalike to the Lululemon Align tank. The v-neck style is flattering and the color options are really fun. This is a perfect option for pilates and peloton.

Workout Leggings and Shorts

HeyNuts Essential 7/8 Leggings

This pair of HeyNuts workout leggings is almost identical to the Align style from Lululemon. They’re my favorite affordable option for low impact workouts and fit almost perfectly. My only issue is that the rise isn’t perfect on me and I do have to pull them up every so often, but that could be because I’m 5’1″. I stopped buying Lululemon leggings because these are 95% as good for a fraction of the cost. I wear my true size XS.

CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Workout Leggings 25″

This pair of leggings is another great budget option for the Align style. They are just a tad bit thinner than the HeyNuts pair above, but not significantly. I own both brands because I got tops from each brand and wanted the exact color match for the leggings. My one note for these is that the lighter colors are a little thinner than the darker shades. I wear the darker colors more often because I feel more confident in them not showing through when I sweat. I wear size XS.

Colorfulkoala High Waisted Biker Shorts with Pockets 6″

This is the best pair of Amazon biker shorts at a budget-friendly price. I first bought them in a nude color to wear underneath dresses (mom-hack!), but the material was so good that I bought a black pair for peloton rides! I wasn’t sure if they’d be high enough quality to wear for running but they are SO SO GOOD. I wear a size small.

The Gym People High Waisted Running Shorts

I ordered these high waisted running shorts to see how they compare to the Lululemon Speed Up shorts. The inseam is not quite 4 inches, but it doesn’t feel too short. The extra-wide waistband is super comfortable and there is a back pocket that should fit a phone. These run true to size and I got a small. (I would typically order an XS but I’m pregnant so I wanted a little room. They are slightly loose so just order your normal size.)

Blooming Jelly Quick-Dry Running Shorts with Pockets 1.75″

I own another pair of Blooming Jelly shorts that I LOVE (see below), but someone told me that these are even better. I’m super excited to try them! I ordered a size small in Navy.

Blooming Jelly High Waisted Running Shorts with Zipper Pocket

This pair of hot pink running shorts shocked me because the back is longer than the front, which I love and I haven’t seen that often. I struggle to find workout shorts that flattering without showing too much booty, and these are such a great affordable find. I got hot pink, as you’d expect. I wear a size small in these.

Workout Accessories

Hair Ties

This is the only kind of hair tie that holds my hair for a run without getting loose. I swear by them.

Injinji Running No-Show Toe Socks

These toe socks might look silly, but if you struggle with toe blisters or crowding in the front of your running shoes, these are a serious game-changer. My toes always want to cross over each other and this fixed it.

Simple Modern 40 oz Tumbler

I do NOT think the Stanley 40oz water bottle is worth the hype and this Simple Modern tumbler is why. I wish everyone would try this because it’s 100% better than the Stanley; it’s slimmer, lighter and doesn’t leak near the straw. And it’s cheaper!

We runners love our shoes. And for good reason: they keep us comfortable and strong on the roads, and we wear them daily, so it’s nice when they’re cute too.

But if you’re new to running, the variety of running shoes on the market can be intimidating. How do you know which type to wear and when? What even are the different types? Is one brand better than the next? In today’s post, I’m going to give you a quick rundown (pun intended) of the main categories of running shoes and share my top pick for each.

For context, I run in Brooks, New Balance, Adidas, and sometimes Nike. I always get professionally fitted at a running store like Fleet Feet when I’m buying a new pair of running shoes, and I HIGHLY recommend you do that too. Knowing the categories below is helpful, but a professional can help you determine which type you need. They’ll analyze your gait and get you to try on a variety of shoes. They’ll watch you walk and jog in them to help you figure out your best option.

Running Shoe Types: A Shoe Guide for Every Foot and Type of Run

Trainers

First up, trainers! Trainers are your day-to-day go-to shoe for your easy mileage needs. These are the shoes you’ll likely spend the most time running in, so it’s important to make sure that they fit comfortably and feel good for each run. When it comes to picking the perfect pair of trainers for your feet, there are several sub-categories to from: stability shoes, neutral shoes and minimalist shoes. Here’s a quick rundown on each.

The stability shoe

Stability trainers are often considered the clydesdales of the running shoe world. These shoes usually sport a lot of dense, hard foam around the sole. The purpose of this foam is to provide support for feet whose arches are weaker or prone to collapse. Some stability shoes also emphasize ankle support, locking the joint in place to prevent over-pronation. (Pronation refers to when your feet roll inward as you push off the ground). 

These are great for people who over-pronate and they should last for a good while. The only cons are that they can be heavy, and can sometimes really mess with a runner who already has strong ankles and arches.

A great stability shoe on the market right now is the Brooks Adrenaline.

 The neutral shoe

Neutral trainers are the most popular running shoes on the market. They’re made for the widest range of feet possible, and they work well for a large group. These feature an even distribution of light foam around the entire shoe, which provides some basic cushion without too much padding. As a result, they’re a perfect starting point if you’re just getting into running and don’t yet know the particulars of your gait.

As far as lifespan is concerned, neutral shoes are the Goldilocks option: they hold up to a decent block of mileage (around 400-450 miles), without the additional weight that comes from heavy duty structure. 

My top pick for a neutral trainer is the Brooks Ghost (I personally run in these!).

The minimalist shoe

Minimalist shoes skyrocketed in popularity after the release of Christopher McDougall’s 2009 bestseller Born to Run. They aren’t as popular anymore, but there are still things to love about a minimalist shoe. The main difference between these streamlined trainers and their counterparts is the amount of cushion. Minimalist shoes offer very little supportive foam. This can be great for lower mileage runners, mid-foot strikers, or athletes with very strong feet and ankles. However, these shoes tend to break down quickly, and the lack of support can pose a risk to the injury-prone among us.

However, a shoe like this is typically a “faster” shoe, meaning you get quicker turnover in them because they are light. I wear a minimalist shoe when I’m running a road race or doing a workout.

The pair I wear is the Brooks Hyperion Tempo. They’re SO great, but not the best option for someone who is only looking to get 1 pair of running shoes.

Trail shoes

Trail running shoes are what they sound like: running shoes for trail running. Because trails have tougher topography, trail shoes have a couple of key components that make them suited to handle that. First, their outsoles are bigger and squishier than your average running shoe. This extra material prevents them from breaking down quickly, and the soft rubber allows them to bend around stones, sticks, and roots on rugged trails. Trail running shoes also have stiff midsoles for structured support to protect your arches. Finally, they sport reinforced uppers that, while less breathable than typical trainers, offer defense against sharp twigs and brambles.

Obviously, trail shoes are more specialized than regular trainers; they’re fantastic for gnarly surfaces, but not practical on the roads. I’d recommend investing in a sturdy pair of trail shoes only if you are training specifically for a trail race or doing the bulk of your running off the beaten path.

Since I spend a lot of time in Boone, NC, I’ve decided to invest in some Altra Lone Peak trail shoes for my trail running.

Flats

When elite athletes begin a hard workout or toe the line at a major road race, you can pretty much guarantee they’ll be wearing flats. These shoes are all about speed: think Ferrari as opposed to a mini van. 

Racing flats look a bit like minimalist trainers superficially. They’re lightweight, low cushion, and generally streamlined. Most racing flats come equipped with some combination of high-grip outsoles (for traction on slick roads) and a speed board (to spring your foot forward as you run).

I don’t recommend buying these unless you’re racing frequently. My pick would be the Nike Vaporfly.

Spikes

Spikes are the fastest shoe on this list, and they are built for maximum traction on soft surfaces. Think college or high school cross country races that take place on a dirty course, versus a road. Their outsoles are cratered with a series of evenly spaced pits, into which a metal “spike” implement can be fastened. The spikes can be anywhere from 1/16th of an inch to nearly a full inch long. The shoes actually look more like a sock than a shoe, and they aren’t necessarily comfortable, but they do get the job done.

There aren’t a lot of downsides to wearing spikes for spike-appropriate races, except that they can be hard on calves or toes. I wouldn’t recommend wearing them for distances much further than 10k.

New Balance makes a great spike shoe called the FuelCell MD-X.

When it comes down to it, the correct type of running shoe depends on the situation – whether that’s flats for a road race, spikes for the track, trail shoes for wilderness, or a comfy trainer for daily use.

And ultimately, the “best” version of each is the one that you don’t notice when you run. Because that’s really what shoes are for: allowing you to reach your running goals without slowing you down.

I’m very active. In an average week, I’ll run 3-4 times, do pilates and ride the Peloton. Usually doing a bike bootcamp for some strength training. Not to mention I chase my toddler around and going on regular walks.

While pilates and the Peloton have their own equipment, the most important gear when it comes to running and walking is the right pair of shoes. They help keep my feet and entire body, really comfortable. Also, the right shoes can also prevent injuries. It’s funny how walking and running seem like similar activities that work for the same muscle groups, but the truth is our bodies move differently with each one. I’ve shared my favorite running shoes, but I’ve never dedicated a post to my favorite walking shoes. I’m not walking a lot these days since I no longer have a dog, my son doesn’t love the stroller and I’m not injured (thankfully). While I love walking, if I have to choose between a walk and a run, I’ll choose a run!

But, since I get asked about shoes quite often on my Rookie Runner Instagram account, I thought it’d be helpful to explain the difference.

Walking Shoes Vs Running Shoes

As someone who has put in hundreds of miles (literally!) in both running shoes and walking shoes, I’ve noticed that there can a real difference between the two. I used to use my old running shoes for walking, rather than buying dedicated walking shoes. My PT pointed out that it may have been contributing to some injuries that wouldn’t heal. I dealt with plantar fasciitis for months. Also, I had a torn ankle tendon that still bothers me from time to time.) Just because there isn’t as much impact with walking as there is with running, it’s still important to not wear worn out shoes for your walks (whether you’re casually strolling or working up a sweat during a walking workout).

In general, most shoes designed specifically for walking have more cushioning and are usually heavier than running shoes. This extra cushioning helps support your feet and ankles when taking longer strides or having to cover more ground quickly. On the other hand, running shoes generally have less cushioning but are much lighter than walking shoes. The lighter weight helps reduce fatigue when pounding the pavement over long distances. But, what exactly makes the difference between walking shoes vs. running shoes?

What are Walking Shoes?

Walking shoes are designed for comfort, more than anything. Shoes that are specifically designed for walking usually have a little heel cushioning. It helps absorb some of the impact that comes with walking. They don’t need extra forefoot cushioning in their shoes since you don’t toe off as hard as running. This design can potentially decrease injuries in the foot, ankle, and leg.

But, you don’t have to get big clunky, heavy shoes for walking – I mean, unless you want to! Those are in right now! Some of my favorite shoes for walking are lightweight and cute, but do have extra cushion in the heel. You can definitely use running shoes for walking, but you don’t have to. However, I would NOT use walking shoes for running!

Here are some shoes that are great options for walking. Some are true walking shoes and some are running shoes that I like for walking as well.

What are Running Shoes?

Running shoes are lightweight and more flexible but still provide sufficient cushioning. There are various types of running shoes, including neutral shoes with essential support and cushioning, cushioned running shoes with extra padding and motion-control, support shoes with additional arch support for things like pronation or recovering from injuries. Also, there are racing shoes, with high-tech materials like carbon plates, that are designed for going fast on race day (but not necessarily for everyday training and long runs). Then, there are also trail running shoes for exploring off-road.

Most types of running shoes have air or foam cushioning to absorb shock and protect against impact. The best running shoe for you will depend on your stride, running experience and running goals, but ultimately you’ll want what’s most comfortable and feels natural.

  • If you land heavily and/or are doing distance runs, you’ll want more more cushion.
  • If you’re doing shorter distances, you can get away with “less” shoe.
  • If you’re recovering from an injury and/or are injury-prone, you’ll want to try supportive, cushioned shoes for most of your runs.

The right shoe will minimize impact (which helps minimize your risk of injuries), can help running feel easier and will definitely help you enjoy running more.

Choosing the right shoe size is important (unless you enjoy losing toenails) and most people will be happiest in a shoe that is 1/2 to a full size larger than their usual shoe size. I wear a size 6.5 in my sandals, Veja sneakers and heels but I go up to a size 7 in my walking shoes and a size 7.5 in my running shoes. They should be snug but not too tight and give your toes enough room to move and expand as you walk and run. A good rule of thumb is that you want a full thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of your shoe.

Differences Between Running Shoes vs. Walking Shoes

Okay, so now that you know the basic difference between running and walking shoes, let’s talk about a few features to consider as you’re trying shoes on, whether for running or walking.

Cushioning

The cushioning in walking and running shoes obviously helps with comfort, and it also helps reduce the shock when the foot first strikes the ground. Running shoes typically offer more cushioning than walking shoes due to the higher impact forces associated with running compared to walking. In addition, walkers often use a heel-first strike pattern when taking each step, so the cushioning in these shoes is concentrated mainly in the heel region rather than evenly distributed throughout.

On the other hand, most running shoes have cushioning spread across the shoe’s sole as it needs to absorb higher amounts of force. A thick midsole doesn’t necessarily mean it has more cushion, but that can be true, like in the case of Hokas. If just depends on the cushioning technology used for how thick the midsole will be. Weight and Comfort

Running shoes are lighter, which will be more comfortable given the faster foot turnover associated with running. Running shoe manufacturers use different types of cushion or use fewer cushioning layers to help reduce weight. My husband was running in New Balance lifestyle shoes for months before he invested in true running shoes and the first thing he said after his first run in his Brooks Ghost was that it felt so much easier.

In contrast, hiking or trail-type walking shoes usually have thicker treads. It has extra padding layers to protect your feet from whatever terrains you encounter while walking. Even though these features often make hiking or trail-type walking shoes more comfortable than running shoes, they can also add unnecessary weight and bulkiness. Those features are helpful for hiking, protecting your feet and stabilizing your ankles on uneven surfaces. Nonetheless, they can restrict natural movement when trying to move quickly while walking or running. (If you want to run on trails, buy trail running shoes like the Brooks Cascadia; don’t try to run in hiking boots or even most hiking shoes!)

Heel Height and Flare

Walking and running shoes have different heel heights and designs. Running shoes have a higher heel stack height for cushioning and stability during heel strikes while walking shoes have less of a built-up heel. A lot of people like zero-drop shoes for walking (and even running) since they mimic your natural stride. I particularly like Altra for a zero-drop option. Additionally, running shoes have a heel flare for stability and control when you hit the ground.

Appearance wise, there may not be much visible difference between walking and running shoes. So being aware of these more subtle distinctions can help you decide which type of shoe you should wear. Also, whether it’s while strolling or sprinting your way through your next workout session!

Flexibility

A shoe’s flexibility level should be considered when deciding which one to buy, as it can significantly impact movement. Walking shoes have a more rigid construction than running shoes, which provides stability but less flexibility. The design of a running shoe’s sole allows for smooth and efficient movement from when the foot touches the ground to when it pushes off. If you held a pair of walking shoes, you’ll notice there is more resistance. It’s harder to twist or bend at the sole since it has less flexibility compared to a running shoe, if you tried the same thing.

Arch Support

Arch support is critical when selecting your footwear, as it provides balanced support and prevents injuries. Depending on your biomechanics, you will want to look for help or neutral shoes that best suit your needs. For example, arch support in most walking shoes tends to give more cushion. It is how the weight of each step is distributed throughout the entire foot during walking versus running. That being said, your best options is getting fitted properly by a trained professional. This is to ensure you get the right level of arch support that best fits your biomechanics and feet. Companies like Fleet Feet has software that will analyze your foot size, shape and stride. All you have to do is stand and walking on specialized pads designed to measure.

When considering arch support, there are a few key elements to remember. First and more important – it should be comfortable. It shouldn’t feel too tight under your arch or feel like it’s rubbing in a weird spot . It’s the case since that can cause blisters. Second, the right arch support helps put your foot in the right spot. This is so your feet are protected and stride most naturally. Lastly, consider inserts. I don’t think everyone needs inserts. However, they absolutely can help in certain instances, depending on your ankle stability and how a shoe fits you.

Can you wear running shoes for walking?

Yes, absolutely. But I wouldn’t wear true walking shoes for running. I prefer to have separate shoes for running and walking. However, realistically what happens is that I start using my old running shoes for walking. That’s not idea since they have lost cushion. But they usually give me a few more months of out a pair of shoes that I no longer want to run in but don’t want to get rid of yet.

At the end of the day, it’s really up to you. If you were going to get just one pair, I’d go for the Brooks Ghost. I’ve had multiple pairs that work well for both running and walking. They’re comfortable and easy to find!

I’ve been working from home for years, and one of my tricks for being productive and staying motivated is getting “ready” every day. This means real clothes, makeup, and sometimes even curling my hair. Feeling pulled together helps me feel on top of everything, and if I do venture out to run errands with Thomas, I’m already ready to go.

However, over the two and a half years since having Thomas, I’ve grown more comfortable in athleisure outfits, as long as they still look pulled together. The trick has been finding outfits that look really nice but still feel great all day. And, if I’m going to wear athleisure, I like to do my hair and makeup so that I look and feel like myself.

Today I’m sharing what athliesure really is, the difference between workout gear and athleisure outfits, and my favorite recent affordable athleisure picks (mostly from Amazon).

Let’s dive in!

Amazon Athleisure Outfits

Amazon Athleisure Outfits that are Polished & Comfortable

First, let’s start with the basics. Is “Athleisure” even a real word? Actually, yes.

What is athleisure attire?

Since the term athleisure is relatively new, it’s totally fair that some may not even know what it really means! Essentially, the term athliesure refers to clothing that’s comfortable and athletic but also cute and pulled together enough to wear in public. And in my mind, it doesn’t count if I can’t wear sneakers with it.

Is athleisure still in style?

Sure is. And I don’t see it going anywhere for a WHILE.

My wardrobe is slowly filling up matching workout sets, tennis dresses, and colorful athletic shorts, so I feel like I’ve finally found my groove in terms of my activewear style. And let’s be real: the timing couldn’t be better considering I have a wild toddler to chase around outside this summer!

What’s the difference between athletic wear and athleisure?

In general, athleisure outfits are fashion-forward, pulled together, and can be worn appropriately in public, while athletic wear is worn for workouts. But honestly, I don’t believe in strict “rules” for fashion. There are many pieces in my closet that I could wear for a workout and also wear as a cute outfit. And depending on what kind of workouts you do, you might have a ton of crossover. However, as a runner, there are some things I wear for workouts that I absolutely wouldn’t wear as “street style”, like my running shoes. I find that running shoes aren’t usually very cute (and my running shoes are strictly for runs, which helps them last longer), so I have a pair of cute (non-running) sneakers that wear with athleisure outfits.

While you could wear the same clothes for workouts that you also wear as athleisure, my personal differentiation, and what helps me feel cute and polished, is NOT wearing the same clothes for workouts that I wear as cute athleisure. I need the mental separation between the two in order to feel like I’m polished in my athelisure. I’ve also found that HOW I wear an outfit dictates if it’s athleisure or workout gear. I always style my hair and put on at least a little makeup so that I feel pulled-together for the day.

Again, there are no rules. You do you!

Athleisure Outfits for Summer

If you’re working on building out an athleisure wardrobe, here are the staples I’d start with:

  1. A workout dress
  2. A skort
  3. A solid tank or t-shirt
  4. Cute (non-running) sneakers

Okay, now let’s get to the fun part. I did a little digging on Amazon and found some GOOD pieces. I’m also going to include just a couple non-Amazon finds that I think are worth ordering too. Let’s go!

Thin Strap Tennis Dress

My #1 pick from my recent Amazon order (which I placed for this post), is this black tennis dress. It has a built in bra and the shorts underneath are also built in, so keep that in mind. While I generally stray away from dresses with built in bottoms since it’s hard to use the bathroom in them, this one is well-worth the effort required. I have a size XS and it fits perfectly.

You can choose from 11 cute colors too!

White Ribbed Tennis Dress

Unfortunately this white tennis dress was a little too big on me, but MAN is it cute! I love the thicker straps, the pleated skirt, and the wide ribbed detailing down the entire thing. I’m usually a size XS and this only comes in sizes S-XL, so it should be perfect for anyone to wears those sizes. It comes with shorts to wear underneath, and the bra is built in.

I especially love that it’s feminine enough to pair with slides or heeled sandals if you were in a pinch. In fact, it would make a great travel dress for Europe, and would be perfect with a denim jacket for an extra layer.

Thick Strap Tennis Dress

If the pleats and ribbing of the dress above are a little to preppy or feminine for your taste, you’ll probably love this simple tennis dress. It comes in 11 colors and has separate shorts to wear with it. The back also as a pretty crossover detail.

Pink Pleated Skort

I originally ordered this pink skort for golf, but I think I’ve worn it a good 6 times since I got it a week or two ago. The waist band is thick and holds you in (it’s not super stretchy so it feels a little snug when you’re pulling it on, but once it’s on you will LOVE the feeling), and the back is a little longer than the front. I have a size XS.

High Neck Racer Back Tank

I got this high neck tank a few months ago and it has held up really well. I find that I wear it most often with the pink skirt or these hiking shorts. The racer back and high neck combo is the perfect sporty shape. I have a size XS.

Hot Pink Running Shorts

There’s nothing better than hot pink clothes. They make you feel SO TAN! These running shorts (which I don’t wear for running), are special because the back is just a hair shorter than the front. I struggle to find athletic shorts that are long enough to feel appropriate as a mom, but these hit the mark because of the high-low cut. I wear a size XS.

Hot Pink Leggings

While legging season is extremely short lived in Winston-Salem, these would be the ideal pant for a cooler spring or summer climate. And I’ll definitely get to wear them in the mountains for cooler days this summer. I ordered these hot pink leggings to wear for pilates (this is actually one of the only things I’ve worn for both a workout and as athleisure), and I got the matching tank with them.

However, when I wear them for athleisure, rather than pilates or the gym, I pair them with a white tee. The leggings look like they are almost sold out in some sizes (in the pink), but there are SO many colors to choose from!

Belt Bag

I carry my Amazon belt bag almost every time I wear an athleisure outfit. It’s practical AND trendy, which a rare combo, ha! I compared it to the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag and they are almost identical, other than the Lululemon logo, so I highly recommend the Amazon version since it’s easier to find in stock and much cheaper! The one below is Lululemon because it was more conveniently located when I took these photos. You can see some snaps of the Amazon version on me in this review.

New Balance 237 Sneakers

I have two favorite pairs of sneakers for athleisure outfits. This pair of New Balance 237s is such a cute option for athleisure because they have a little bit of height and they’re sporty, but not in a super athletic, “I work out in these” type of way. They also come in a ton of colors!

On Cloudnova Form Sneakers

The other pair of sneakers I love are the Cloudnova Form sneakers from On. I got mine from ShopBop, where you can use your Prime shipping perks! They’re SO comfortable (and have amazing arch support), and cute as can be.

Abercrombie Romper

Not an Amazon find, but I wanted to include this black romper in this post since it’s another great athleisure option and not very expensive. I’m wearing an XS Petite in this, but I likely would have gotten the regular length if I had tried it on in-store for a little more length. It has pockets, and it’s just SO flattering! A perfect outfit for a zoo outing with your kids, a park play-date, or for a day full of errands.

Is Lululemon considered athleisure?

Absolutely! I love to wear my Align leggings and yoga pants in the cooler months for athleisure outfits, especially as an alternative to baggy sweatpants. And I also find that their Scuba pullover is a much cuter option than wearing any of my old hoodies.

I also love this pair of Lululemon lookalike joggers in the fall and winter as one of my go-to athleisure pieces.

What to wear running is a question every runner asks themselves before heading out, whether they’re a beginner or have been logging miles for decades. I’ve been running for almost 24 years and have tried dozens of brands and styles of running shoes, running bras, tanks, socks, you name it! I have a few go-to brands for my running clothes and specific things that I tend to replace every couple of years.

Besides clothes, there are a few things I invest in that last for years, including:

Garmin running watch – I use this to track my pace and distance for all my runs (and it syncs to Strava)

Shockz earbuds – I don’t like airpods for running – here’s why

Hyperice Hypervolt, a massage gun that’s great for loosening knots

Roll Recovery R8 – this helps massage muscles in a different way than the percussive nature of a massage gun. I like using this before I run.

What to Wear Running

My favorite running clothes come from Lululemon, Athleta or Oiselle since they fit well and last for YEARS. I like some Amazon activewear for athleisure or other workouts, but I find it doesn’t fit as well as the more expensive brands (I tried running in Amazon shorts last week and had the worst chafing).

I’m more forgiving for the workout clothes I wear for pilates or riding the Peloton, but I have high standards for running gear since being uncomfortable can ruin a run. I’m also pretty hard on running gear since I typically run 30 miles a week and get very sweaty, so I’d rather invest in quality gear that will last for years.

So, there are my top picks that I’ve had for multiple years and have logged hundreds of miles in.

Running Shorts

The perfect short is hard to find and when I find it, they discontinue it. My main criteria is that they aren’t too short, have a back pocket for my phone that doesn’t bounce and has a comfortable built-in liner OR no liner at all. If you have a favorite pair of shorts that meets that criteria, let me know! The Lululemon Fast & Free is my absolute favorite, if I could only pick one, but it seems they no longer make them. These are other pairs I do like, but I’m back on the unicorn hunt!

Athleta Mesh Race Short – Nothing fancy but they are comfortable and cute. They’re a nice length with a 4″ inseam and come in a variety of colors. However, the pockets leave something to be desired. I hate side pockets so I never use it and there isn’t a phone pocket, so my phone stays home if I run in these. I wear an XS.

Amazon Biker Shorts 6″ – I was obsessed with the Lululemon Fast and Free shorts for years, but unfortunately they stopped making them a while go. Since then, I’ve tried SO many brands hoping to find a great alternative, and this pair of 6″ biker shorts from Amazon fits the bill. I’m thrilled to have found such a great option for a fraction of the cost!

Brooks Chaser 5″ Shorts – These are similar to the Athleta shorts, but I slightly prefer the look of these. I also find the built-in liner more comfortable. However, they’re so hard to find online!

Running Leggings

Lululemon Fast & Free 7/8 tights – These running tights are lightweight enough for warmer days but also got me through all my cold runs during the winter in North Carolina. (If you live in a very cold climate, try to get your hands on their fleece lined leggings) While training for the 2019 Boston Marathon, I did all my long runs in the Fast & Free tights since they can hold a ton of fuel. I also love the pocket at the back of the waistband to hold my phone – it doesn’t bounce AT ALL. I wear a 2 or 4 in these. I’ve had a pair for 5 years and they still look brand new.

Amazon HeyNuts Leggings – I ran in these a few weeks ago when my Lululemon pair was dirty (and still too sweaty from the previous day’s run to even re-wear… tell me I’m not the only one who does that in desperate times!). I was dreading the run, thinking they’d slide down but they actually stayed in place really well and the waistband was more comfortable. They don’t have a pocket so I couldn’t run with my phone, but they’re a great budget-friendly option.

Tops

Tanks: This Athleta In Motion tank is the goldilocks of tanks. Not too loose, not too tight. If it’s too flowy, it annoys me but I find a form-fitting tank uncomfortable for running. I also don’t like crop tops for running. This Athleta top is my favorite – if you see my running in warm weather, you can almost guarantee it’s what I’m wearing. It’s flattering and the perforated fabric keeps me cool. Over the last few years, I’ve purchased quite a few and now own 6 or 7 colors. It also holds up well in the washer and dryer.

Short Sleeves: I don’t wear short sleeves often since I’d rather just wear a tank, but if I am wearing something with sleeves, I like this one from Amazon. It’s a lookalike for the Lululemon Swiftly but less than half the price.

Long-sleeved top: This Brooks long-sleeve half zip is far and away my favorite long-sleeved top. It’s so flattering, comfortable and holds up well in the wash. I have an XS.

Bras

On Performance Bra – I got this as part of a partnership with On Running last year and then ended up buying a second one since I love it so much. It’s supportive but not so restrictive that I feel like I’m putting on body armor. It has sewn-in padding too! I’m a 32 B/C right now and it works great, but if I’m on the C/D end of things (or larger, like when I was running while breastfeeding), I need more support and go for the…

SheFit Bra – This is the most intense bra I’ve ever put on (and I’ve probably tried on hundreds in my running life), but if you need serious support, this is what you want. When I was breastfeeding, especially in the first year, I was rocking F-G cups and no bra was cutting it. This was a game changer.
